Spring (April to June) and Autumn (September to November) are the most popular times to visit Xi'an. The weather is mild, with pleasant temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Summers (July to August) can be hot, and winters (December to February) can get cold, with temperatures occasionally dropping below freezing.
Yes, most foreign visitors to China, including Xi'an, will need a visa. Be sure to apply for a Chinese visa before traveling. There are various types of visas depending on the purpose of your visit (tourism, business, etc.).
By Air: Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) is the main airport. It’s well connected to major cities in China and several international destinations.
By Train: Xi'an is a major hub in China's high-speed rail network, making it easy to travel from cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu by train. The high-speed trains to/from Xi'an Railway Station are very efficient.
By Bus: Xi'an is connected by long-distance buses to many cities across China, but traveling by train or plane is generally more comfortable and faster. You only can consider bus when train and plane cannot reach.
Public Transportation: Xi'an has an extensive public bus system and a modern metro network with several lines that are easy to navigate. Tickets are affordable, and metro stations are well marked in both Chinese and English.
Taxis and Ride-Sharing: Taxis are readily available, but it’s advisable to have your destination written in Chinese. Apps like Didi Chuxing (China's Uber) work well in Xi'an.
Biking and Walking: Xi'an’s city center is pedestrian-friendly, and you can rent bicycles or e-bikes to explore the city. Many major attractions are within walking distance from one another.
The primary language spoken in Xi'an is Mandarin Chinese. While English is taught in schools, it is not widely spoken outside of tourist areas. It’s helpful to have a translation app or learn a few basic phrases in Chinese, especially when exploring non-tourist parts of the city.
Huimin Street: It's a bustling street with numerous shops selling local handicrafts, snacks, and souvenirs.
The Grand Tang Mall: Besides the entertainment and dining options, there are also many stores selling traditional Chinese clothing, cultural products, etc.
Xi'an is generally a very safe city for tourists. Petty crime like pickpocketing can happen, especially in crowded areas, but violent crime is rare. It;s always advisable to keep an eye on your belongings and avoid dark, isolated areas at night.
